Workers Using More Drugs

According to Dr. Barry Sample, the Senior Director of Science and Technology for Quest Diagnostics, there has been a steady increase of drug use positivity in workplace drug testing trends since 2012, having reached a 10-year high in the latest data.

Dr. Sample reviews the Quest Diagnostics Drug Testing Index in coordination with the National Survey on Drug Use and Health to compare positivity trends alongside self-reported drug use over time to come to conclusions about the current climate of workplace drug use.

Here are some of the findings:

  • Overall employee drug use in society is rising among employers without a drug testing program.
  • There is typically a 30 to 45 percent higher occurrence of self-reported drug use for respondents who work for an employer without a drug testing program.
  • Self-reported marijuana use, the most commonly detected drug by the DTI, has increased year-over-year since 2010.
